"Local Concerns — Hong Kong Documentaries Before and After the 1997 Handover"

Curator: Bryan CHANG (Film critic, Hong Kong independent film director)

Speakers: LEE Wai-yi (v-artivist Director),
Vincent CHUI (Independent filmmaker, Ying E Chi Artistic Director)

It is common for documentaries to be initiated by the emergence of major socio-political events, especially at times in search of self-identification and sense of belonging out of uncertainties. Hong Kong is under the spotlight of the international media at the historic moment of “one country, two systems” in 1997 – when visionary locals used documentaries to mark a spontaneous study of their identification(s), the fear of Communism is not the only voice raised. We cannot speak of local identification nor become who we are today without first strengthening local consciousness. Together we project hope while doing retrospection, and to walk through the slow pace of development of Hong Kong documentaries.

Date and time: 6/ 1/ 2012 (Fri) 7:30pm

Venue: agnès b. CINEMA, Hong Kong Arts Centre

Conducted in Cantonese. Free Admission.
