A Man with
Style
Style is hardly
the first word
that comes to
mind when
picturing Miyata
Junichi, a
50-something
blue-collar
worker who is so
ineffectual that
his children are
barely aware he
exists. When he
begins to
develop stomach
problems, he
starts to
believe that he
has cancer – the
same disease
that took his
wife away from
him years ago.
But with the
help of his best
friend, he
begins to win
his children’s
understanding.
Indie wunderkind
Ishii Yuya
(Sawako Decides,
34 HKIFF)
graduates to the
mainstream in
this heartfelt
family drama. |

Cannonball
Wedlock
(Konzen Tokkyu)
24-year-old Chie
boasts a total
of five
boyfriends, from
the sweetly
inane freshmen
and the divorced
sales manager to
the
good-for-nothing,
pot-bellied
baker. Marriage
seems absurd to
her – that is,
until the
bouquet falls
squarely into
her hands at a
friend’s
wedding, and she
literally starts
rating her
boyfriends. |

Wig
Unless you’re a
prince, there is
nothing that
harms a
bachelor’s
eligibility more
than pattern
baldness. This
gentle comedy,
based on
best-selling
essays
consisting of
real-life
observations,
studies the
plight of office
worker Moriyama,
a man with
rapidly receding
hairline. But he
is given a new
lease on life
when he meets
Owada, a
peculiar
shopkeeper, and
is sold a
fitting new
toupee. The hair
piece allows him
to meet and fall
in love with the
beautiful Ryoko,
even as the hair
piece continues
to give him
hair-raising
problems. |

Sankaku
Momose’s love
life with Kayo,
his drama queen
of a girlfriend,
has become
depressingly
stale. But when
her 15-year-old
sister Momo
comes to Tokyo
to stay for the
summer, his
carnal
imagination is
tickled day by
day by the coy
and
innocent-looking
girl, who likes
to whisper in
his ear and walk
around the house
half-naked. In
this cynical
romantic comedy,
Yoshida Keisuke
effortlessly
punctures
masculine pride
and brings out
the most
pathetic in men
as they wallow
helplessly in
the excitement
and misery of a
sankaku, a
triangle. |
